Yoghurt is a long-established and popular drink originating in the Middle East. In Europe, it was spread by the Turks through the Balkans and beyond. It contains many vitamins and trace elements, as well as beneficial bacterial microflora. The lactose content and tolerance of yoghurt depend on the ingredients used and the individual’s response. It is ideal for combining with fruit, nuts and dried fruit, and is also used in many recipes.

Unfortunately, shop-bought yoghurts are often enriched with additives such as pectin to thicken them or flavourings to “improve” their taste. Yoghurts kept for a long time in shop fridges also have significantly fewer active bacteria than fresh ones.

Homemade yoghurt is healthy, easy to make and tasty; above all, you know what you are eating.

Remember to buy bacterial starter cultures as well.
