Description
A colostrometer is a simple tool for an indicative assessment of colostrum quality on the farm. It helps compare samples before feeding calves, using the relationship between colostrum density and immunoglobulin content. This is an indirect assessment read from a colour scale.
A lower density, around 1.035, corresponds to the red zone and lower colostrum quality. A higher value, around 1.045, indicates more immunoglobulins and the dark-green zone. Interpret the result according to the instrument’s scale and instructions.
For measurement, prepare a colostrum sample cooled to room temperature. Immerse the hydrometer so that it floats freely without touching the container walls. Clean it thoroughly after every use.
